OH - THOSE PRECIOUS OLD HYMNS OF THE FAITH - SO RICH WITH SOUND DOCTRINAL MEANING.
Sadly, many Christian churches have been moving, more and more, toward that awful, nursery-school
quality, dumbed-down, barely sensible, so-called, "contemporary" music.
I am sure the
forces of evil are deliberately involved in this, separating us from the dear, rich, high quality, hymns of our precious
Christian heritage.
Of course, this is done under the "cover story," of being "modern,"
and appealing to young folks.
When a church leader mentioned this appeal to young folks, I struggled
to keep from laughing.
I pointed out to him that whenever one of the "oldies" was sung,
the singing volume of BOTH young and old in the congregation ROSE dramatically, showing
the fallacy of his argument.
As I say, it is just a cover story to bring in damaging evil, causing
disconnect to our rich, excellent heritage.
Certainly there ARE, some high quality relatively
recent hymns.
I deeply regret, not seeing this evil thing coming and failing to instill the
great, old hymns in my kids, at home, from their early age.
Once they got older, it
seemed to them sort of corny to sing at home.
Looking at my article title, I cite
two of the many great traditional hymns.
The first set of underlined verses,
(in the first hymn) speak of salvation in the sense of the believer obtaining instant, complete, and permanent forgiveness
upon his embracing the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ by faith.
The second set
of underlined verses, (in the second hymn), speak of salvation in a second sense, of the lifelong work of the Holy Spirit
in the believer,"breaking the power of cancelled sin," in our lives.
This
is often called "sanctification."
IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL,
with those lovely lyrics:
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my
lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
is
nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
AND, OH FOR
A THOUSAND TONGUES:
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer's praise,
the glories of my God
and King,
the triumphs of his grace!
He breaks the power of canceled sin,
he
sets the prisoner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean;
his blood availed for me.
